THE BR
ITISH SOLDIER
I am ex Royal Signals and am an above knee amputee so I cannot do any physical feats.
But seeing all these lads coming back from the Afghan conflict some with horrific
injuries, I find I feel for them and so I feel the need to help them so I have compiled
a charity book of poetry that has been written by serving and veteran soldiers, wives
and families etc
The book is A5 size and contains around 45 poems and is called THE
BRITISH SOLDIER and all money
raised goes to Afghan Heroes a charity run by a mother
and friends who lost a son and also the British Limbless Ex Service Men's Association
to which I belong and they have done a lot for me.

The fate of Singapore was sealed long before the Japanese attack in December 1941. The blame lay with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who refused to listen to warnings from military advisors to reinforce defences in Singapore/Malaya, convinced the Japanese would never dare to attack a ‘white power’. Obsessed with beating German General Erwin Rommel, he poured into the Middle East massive resources that should have gone to the Far East. However when, inevitably, Singapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942, Churchill attempted to deflect criticism by accusing the defenders there of spineless capitulation.
Recently released information from the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington reveals that United States President Franklin Roosevelt not only knew of the impending attack on Pearl Harbour but actually instigated it. Although Roosevelt promised a shield of B-17 aircraft for Singapore from Manila, General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines had been told to do nothing until after the Japanese attacks there and at Pearl Harbour so that the United States could claim an unprovoked assault that would allow them to declare war on Japan.
This book provides an account of events during World War II as they unfolded in Malaya, Singapore and elsewhere in the world prior to the Japanese attack, as well as a detailed study of the troops on the ground attacking and defending Singapore.

‘Intercepted at Sea: The Human Cost of Insecure Communications During Two World Wars,’
E-mail john.nixon15@btinternet.com.
Whilst many people are aware of the strategic advantage gained by the Allies during World War Two by the cracking of the ‘Enigma’ code at Bletchley Park, few are aware that Allied naval codes could be read by the Germans from 1937-43, leading to enormous losses of ships and personnel over this period. Based on the experiences and research of Leslie Howson, a former Petty officer during World War II, the co-authors examine the history of careless and unguarded messages sent between Royal Navy and allied ships. These lapses of security could have been avoided, Howson argues, but for the stubborn refusal of the Admiralty to address the problem. The book supplies plenty of detailed evidence to support this claim and encompasses the historical, social, economic and political contexts of its subject matter. The final chapter includes an apology by Leslie Howson for the ‘avoidable deaths of 40,000 Merchant seamen during World War II,’ for which he felt a sense of guilt as a member of the Royal Navy whose role, among others, was to protect the British Merchant Fleet. The book is dedicated to those who lost their lives in such harrowing circumstances. Those with an interest in Naval communications will find much thought-provoking material in this forthright book, which pulls no punches in its criticism of ‘the powers-that-be.’
