Stockport ‘s Heart – Where For Art Thou ?
By Richard Haynes
Stockport’s heart where for Art thou?
Victorian columns rise austere and proud
Town Hall fathers, long forgotten
Chose classic Corinthian for their monument
Long to outlast its temporary cousins
Laughing at new buildings of poor materials
They’ll not be long for this world !
Th’ Gallery stands aloft and strong
Thousands pass in busy lives
Mental note – must check it out
Soon forgotten til the next time
Hatters are playing – maybe one day
Home for exhibitions ancient and new
Reassuring drab daubes strangely impress
I’m sorry our kid can do better than that!
Dazzling genius worth thousands can quite depress
Uplifting innovation with dusty cousins
That remain unfashionable unsold unloved
Launching careers and changing lives
Disappointment at ‘ a sure thing’
Putting food on the empty table
Tonight we’ll eat the bread of man
Tomorrow more ideas for better work
And dreams of treats that never come
Work into the night for the exhibition
Lack of sleep clouds the vision
Stockport Art Guild watch out
This one will set ‘em talking
We’re shocked – its rude – its nude
This is London Road not London Town
This temple is not ready
For Roman nudity and depravity
Swarms of starlings hide the screams
Highly choreographed animal display
With life and movement they circle the sky
Alive with more beauty than exhibitions within
Guild of Art, Local Gallery, Home of leaflets
Grey and Imposing – Iron gates locked closed
Ghosts of shows bad and good rattle around
Only people bring the empty shell to life
Once a year the terrible toll of Stockport’s finest
We remember those strong young lads
Cut down by mindless order and cruel shell
Stockport’s broken heart – Where for Art thou?
November 12 th each year the building returns
To its special shows and arty ways
Poetry, paintings ,plinths and performance
Thanks to those who went from Wellington Road to Armadeggan
